About the Department :

The School of Women’s Studies is a recognized center of the University Grant Commission, The school has a multipronged approach of activities. It runs M.A.(sponsored Course) in Women’s Studies and Ph.D Course . It is receiving the fund since 9th plan period and now it is placed under phase –III of UGC plan.

Director :

Prof, Sabita Acharya has been working as Director of the School since 2014, Prof, Acharya belongs to the Department of Anthropology and we have been able to go ahead under her guidance.

Course Coordinator:

Prof. Swarnamayee Tripathy has been working as course Co-ordinator since 2014. She belongs to the Dept. Of Public Administration and the course is running smoothly under her supervision.

The objectives of the School are :

1. To assist in the change of the existing environment to include women’s visions and needs by bringing together scholars, activists and agencies involved in this process of change,

2. To assist in the creation of an atmosphere where women will enjoy their rights in all spheres,

3. To enable the University in playing a more committed and meaningful role on developmental activities of women.

Strength and potential of the Centre :

1. The School has a strong teaching and research programme.

2. In Orissa the School has the one and only feminist library.

3. The School is the potential nodal women’s resource centre for the whole state of Orissa.

Major Thrust Areas :

Teaching, Training, Research & Publication, Field Work, Advocacy, Network and Clustering. The school runs a two –year post graduation course and Ph.D. course since 2000. There are 30 seats in each batch of P.G. course. Each year more than 5-6 boys take admission which shows positive trend in gender equality. Currently 24 students are pursuing their Ph.D. on various upcoming women’s issues like sexual harassment at work place , corporatisation of Maternal Health services, Women and popular culture etc.
